Presence

Your Connection To The Universe

At what point does the universe stop and you start?

Are you really separate from everything else?

Yes you are the person with your name, job, friends and family who is seen through the eyes of others. But you are also your own personal likes and dislikes, fears and desires. There can be no denying that you are also your ever changing body, thoughts and emotions. You are even the cells of your body and the atoms that make up those cells. At the tiniest (sub nuclear) level, you appear to scientists as a mysterious buzz of infinite possibilities…and the really cool part is…so does everything else in the universe!

You exist on all of these levels…the question is, which level occupies most of your attention? How often throughout your day do you recognize the fundamental unity of all things? How often do you look upon another person, or approach a situation in a way that acknowledges the connection we all share?
The world would indeed be a more harmonious place if a logical understanding of this concept was enough to create a meaningful change in our lives. But old habits of repetitive thinking commonly cloud the sunny insights of compassion and lead us back to the confines of our separate identity.

Why is it so hard to make changes in our lives?
In relation to health…why do so many well intentioned diet plans or exercise regimes fall by the wayside, even when they are started with genuine determination and a desire to succeed?
To answer this question, try the following exercise:
Close your eyes, try and count ten slow breaths with a pause between each one and observe what your mind does…… Were you carried away by the content of your thinking or did you make it all the way to ten?

Every thought has a biochemical effect in the body. In other words, every thought has an emotional aspect to it. A new thought activates certain pathways in the brain and has a particular effect on the cells of your body. In comparison to the unconscious repetitive thought patterns that most of us develop over a lifetime, the chemical (emotional) effect of a new thought is minimal.
Emotions act to chemically reinforce an experience into long term memory. While they colour our experiences and add to the richness of life, our unconscious attachment to their biochemical effects can bind us to destructive behaviour patterns and make positive change an uphill battle.
No matter how logical or enlightening a new idea may be, a mere mental concept is no match for the powerful biochemical cocktail of emotions coursing through your body.

So how do I break my old habits and make some positive healthy changes?

Learn to cultivate a level of consciousness that is free from thought. A state of being in which awareness of something (a thought or object) becomes just awareness.
A wonderful way to do this is through the practice of meditation. With regular, focused attention on this fundamental level of consciousness, intellectual knowledge broadens into a deeper, non conceptual understanding which does not involve the thinking mind.

Meditation truly is a journey of self discovery in which each person, in their own way, comes upon the realisation of the unquestionable unity of all things. While this awakening is not something that can be directly transferred from one person to another, the passion for it can be. That's what we’d like to share with you.

Although when you are first learning RISE Personal Training meditation techniques it is helpful to sit or lie with your eyes closed and remove all distractions, ultimately we are dedicated to teaching you how to apply the essence of what you learn to your daily activities. We call it meditation in action. In this way, every thing you do becomes more conscious…every meal you eat, more enjoyable…every workout you do, more effective…and every interaction, more harmonious.
